Why is science without wisdom and conscience useless? Why is it dangerous? Why will it destroy mankind?
Science can and has done wonders. It has made it possible to make our life easier and better in some ways. It has made it possible for us to have more time to do what we really want to do. It has made it possible to get this message to the world.
But, science without wisdom and conscience will also lead us to destroy ourselves. Science is a good tool but it is only a tool. Like a knife, science has to be used with
wisdom, conscience and skill. It needs to be guided by people with wisdom and conscience so that it benefits mankind and not destroy it. Science is like a bright and talented child, full of potential but it needs a wise parent to guide it. Without proper guidance it will lead us to destruction!Look at the world! Are we not heading that way? Wars, pollution, climate change, toxic wastes, superbugs, etc, etc, etc. Do we not need guidance?
Some quotes that I came across of others that reached the same conclusion:
“With the monstrous weapons man already has, humanity is in danger of being trapped in this world by its moral adolescents. Our knowledge of science has already outstripped our capacity to control it. We have many men of science, too few men of God. Man is stumbling blindly through a spiritual darkness while toying with the precarious secrets of life and death. The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience.” (General Omar N. Bradley in 1948)
Notice, how General Bradley brings God into the picture? God is the only one that can give us the proper wisdom and train our
conscience properly so that we triumph instead of self-destruct.“The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice.” (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi)
Notice how Mr. Ghandi brings God into the picture? We did not create conscience but we do need spiritual guidance so that it functions properly.
“All our modern global crises are the outcome of science without wisdom. If we are to avoid in this century the horrors of the last one - wars, death camps, dictatorships, poverty, environmental damage - we urgently need to learn how to acquire more wisdom, which in turn means that our institutions of learning become devoted to that end.” (http://www.nick-maxwell.demon.co.uk)
The warning has been sounded by much better people than me. But are we listening? Are we giving heed? Or will we ignore warnings as we always do? Time is running out. Our future hangs in the balance!
