Why Do We Eat?

Why do we eat? But why do we eat so much? Why do we eat what we eat, which more often than not, is not the best food to optimize our health?

Why do we eat?

We eat because we need to eat. We eat to live. We eat because it is one of the pleasures of life. Eating is a gift from God. In Ecclesiastes 2:24, we are told that eating is a great pleasure of life and that it is a gift from God to enhance our happiness. How happy would we be if we could not eat?

Is it really

a necessity to eat?

I have read about a few people that apparently do not consume any food. They live on air and are called Breatharians. However, I don’t really know how true that is and I definitely do not recommend it.

Even Jesus ate food and said that man does not live on bread alone but bread is a component to live. (Matthew 4:4) Jesus also told us to pray for the food that we need each day. (Matthew 6:11) Yes, we need food to live and so need to eat.

How much should we eat?

We should only eat enough calories to have the energy we need to enjoy each day and enough calories to maintain a pleasant body weight.

We eat because of need but we overeat because of greed.

Too many people overeat. Too many people eat foods that give little energy but more body mass

than we need. Overeating is never a good thing. It impedes proper digestion. It can cause acid reflux. It can result in being overweight and obesity. It can result in mental sluggishness and spiritual harm. (Luke 21:34)

Why Are so Many People Making Themselves Sick by the Way They Eat?

Their education is nutrition is very poor. They become addicted to food. They have become addicted to usually two bad foods: refined sugar and refined salt. Both enhance the flavor of food but heavily abused.

They eat junk food, they eat before going to sleep, they skip breakfast, and they gulp their food quickly. These are some of the ways that people are making themselves sick by the way they eat.

So, why do we eat? Do we eat because of need or because of greed? Do we really need to eat as much as we do? Do we really need to eat some of the foods we consume? It has often been said that we are what we eat. It is so much better to eat what we need!
