Apparently, over two billion people call themselves Christians. They are divided into some forty thousand denominations. So one would think that there are a lot of Christians but is that really so? Just, what is a Christian and what does a Christian do?
A Christian would be one who follows the teachings and manner of life of Jesus Christ. Jesus himself said in Matthew 7:13-14 that his followers would be few, as few would find the road to everlasting life. In Matthew 7:21-23 Jesus stated that some would claim to be Christians but their works would betray them as making afalse claim.
So what is a Christian and what does a Christian do?
Let’s see what Jesus Christ himself said that would help one identify a genuine Christian:
1) Matthew 4:4. A true Christian would daily read the Bible and have a deep respect for the Bible as the word of God. Just like a person eats food each day, so he would eat spiritual food each day by reading and meditating on God’s word and would try to apply what he learns in his life.
2) John 13:34-35. Love would be a dominating force in the life of one who would
3) Matthew 28:19-20. A Christian would be preacher and go and preach the word of God to those that want to know about the Christian way. What would be the focus of his preaching? According to Matthew 3:23, the focus or the theme of his preaching was the kingdom of God.
If Jesus was on earth today, what do you think he would be doing? He would not be doing much different then what he did two thousand years ago! He doesn’t change.
Now that we know what is a Christian and what a Christian does and we want to be a genuine Christian, one who truly follows Jesus Christ, we know what we have to do. With Jesus Christ, it is not what we say or claim that counts but according to Matthew 7:21 and 24, it is what we do that counts.
