Sometimes All You Need Is For Someone To Believe In You

Have you ever wished that someone would just believe in you? Sometimes that is all you need to go from a down-and-outer to a champion.

Sometimes all you need is someone to give you a break. Sometimes all you need is for someone to recognize your potential. Sometimes you just need someone to recognize the champion on the inside camouflaged by discouragement and bad breaks.

Let me tell you about Gwendolyn!

When she moved into the area where I lived then, it was not because of choice but by painful circumstances. Her happy marriage had come to an end and she was abandoned

to fend for herself with three small children.

Her only choice was to go on social assistance (welfare). She could not work with three small children to care for.

I remember leaving our place of worship on a cold winter night and seeing her and her three children waiting for the bus home. Of course I could not pass without offering them a ride home. I had to insist as she thought it was too much out of my way to take them home. After some reassurance she accepted.

My family and Gwendolyn became friends. I had become a manager for an insurance and mutual funds company. And on a summer vacation that we all shared with another family also, she became curious

about what I was doing. Her interest inspired me to take her under my wings and teach her the business and help her get her licences.

I recognized her potential! I realized that there was a champion there. She just needed someone to believe in her and give her a break. She did need lots of reassurance along the way, until she metamorphosed into a confident champion that was ready to take on the world. Nothing was going to stop her now!

She eventually became one of my best agents. I eventually quit the business, because of way too much pressure and stress. But Gwendolyn continued and thrived and stayed in the business till the day she died, a couple of years ago. At her funeral many from her office came to honour this champion.

Rest, my friend, rest. I will see you soon!

All I did was what had been done to me and is still being done to me. Someone gave me a break! Someone cared enough to believe in me! Sometimes, it’s all that we need!
