Try to figure out what you want and / or what you want to accomplish! Ask yourself, what might be the possible results of deciding one way or another? Then decide on the option that will most likely result in what you want.

Don’t hurry making the decision unless you have to! If you have time, throw the possible decision around in your head for a few days. Take the necessary time to reason, think,

and meditate on the matter. If there is no rush, don’t hurry. Think and reason on how the decision will affect you in the short run and in the long run. Example: what you will wear at a wedding that is months away. The decision doesn’t have to be made right away. You have a bit of time to toy with different decisions.

Seek the advice of others! What kind of car should you buy? Read some articles about the different cars you are considering. Talk to some mechanics. Talk to people that might have the possible car you want to buy and ask how they like it. Take the car for a test drive a few times. See how you feel driving it.

Research subject well! Example: a future career choice. Get to know as much as possible about the ins and outs of this possible career choice. Do some homework. See if you can get a part-time job in this field to kind take it for a test run.

Consider the effect the decision will have! How will this decision affect your family,

your friends, your neighbours, your workmates, etc? Consider the effects on you? Will the decision leave you with a good conscience?

The best source of guidelines is the Bible! Get a good concordance and see what wisdom it has to offer. The book of Proverbs is full of wise counsel on almost any subject. Examples: money, marriage, employment, the future, happiness, etc.

Bring God into the picture! If God is not in the picture, whatever decision you make will sooner or later result in calamity. Of what value is it ‘if one gains the world but loses their soul or future life.’

In the end, the buck stops with you. You will be accountable. You will have to carry your own load. So think and think carefully before you act. As some decisions are irreversible and others are hard to undo once taken: like tattoos, vasectomies, tonsil removal and amputation.

If you make a bad or wrong decision, it is not always the end of the world. On some things you can change your mind, take whatever consequences come with it and make a different decision. Also, you can always use the information to help other people. So, at times something good can result from realizing that you made a decision that now needs to be changed.
