On June 28, 1914, the assassination of crown prince Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary at Sarajevo by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip started a chain of events that plunged the world in a war that eventually came to be called WWI by historians. Does this historical fact concern us in any way? Just how significant is the year 1914 in the history of mankind?
Historians that have looked back to events leading to 1914 and the aftermath have had some very interesting things to say about the year 1914.
What a few of many historians have said about1914:
? “Humanity finally lost its balance, never to recover it to this day.”—General Charles de Gaulle, speaking in 1968 (Le Monde, November 12, 1968).
? “They see the human race, like the hero of a Greek tragedy, driven on by angry gods and no longer the master of fate.” (Bertrand Russell, New York Times Magazine, September 27, 1953.)
? “Directly or indirectly all the convulsions of the last half century stem back to 1914.” (The Fall of the Dynasties: The Collapse of the Old Order,New York; 1963, by Edmond Taylor, page 16.) (These three quotations were taken from the book Survival Into a New Earth, chapter 3 page 29 “How Long Will the Present System Last?” published by The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society)
Many other historians could be quoted to show that 1914 and WWI are very significant in the history of mankind.
Here is another significant point about the year 1914. Jehovah’s Witnesses were able to calculate that a time of great troubles would begin in 1914, way back in the 1870’s. Granted, not all that they predicted
Notice what this newspaper had to say:
“When World War I broke out in 1914, “The World,” then a leading newspaper in New York City, stated in its magazine section: “The terrific war outbreak in Europe has fulfilled an extraordinary prophecy. . . . ‘Look out for 1914!’ has been the cry of the hundreds of travelling evangelists, who, representing this strange creed [associated with Russell], have gone up and down the country enunciating the doctrine that ‘the Kingdom of God is at hand.’”—“The World Magazine,” August 30, 1914.” (jv chap. 5 p. 60 Proclaiming the Lord’s Return (1870-1914))
The question that we all need to think about as we watch the daily news is: are we living at a significant time in human history that began with the significant year of 1914 and WWI? I’m convinced that we are. Are You?
