Adam, Moses, Jesus Christ, Christopher Columbus, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson are all famous names of individuals that most people have heard. However, of all the names, which name would you consider to be the greatest and most important name of all?
What is a name? How important is a name? Would you not agree that a name is like a label? A label tells a person a lot. It speaks volumes. A trusted label, because of previous experience, can tell a person who is behind the product, the value of the product, and the reliability one can expect.
A name can conveyimages and information about the individual behind the name. It can quickly bring to our mind, his personality and reputation. If you found a painting with the name Leonardo da Vinci, instead of one with the name Leonardo Mangiapasta, would it make a difference in value? Would not the name Leonardo da Vinci add much more value to the painting?
As an Exercise, I will write a name and see what comes to mind when you read it: Adolph Hitler. Is that just a name or does it bring to mind images, events, and feelings also?
Have you come to know the greatest and most important name? What is the greatest name? Who has the greatest name?
Psalm 83:18 (KJV) “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.” Yes, the greatest name, which is Jehovah, belongs to our Creator and Lifegiver, the Almighty God.
How do you feel about the greatest name? Are you in awe and humbled and full of appreciation that the Almighty God has revealed to us his personal name?
How did Bible characters view God’s name?
Ancient Pharaoh defiantly said that he did not know Jehovah and was not going to obey him. (See Exodus 5:2 in the Darby Translation) He learned the hard way who Jehovah was.
King David praised Jehovah and his glorious name. (See 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 in the American Standard Version)
Jesus Christ prayed that God would glorify his name and a voice came out of heaven saying that He would do just that and also that he had made God’s name known. (See John 12:28; 17:6, 26)
How can one show proper respect for the name of God? Is it by avoiding it or hiding it? Or, is it by using it with respect when speaking to Him in prayer or when speaking of his great acts when speaking to other people?
How do you feel about the name Jehovah, the name of the Almighty God, the name of the Creator of all things, the name of the Giver of life and all things, the name of the greatest Being and most important Being in the universe? Will you be proud of that name, use it, and make it known to others?
