In these troublesome times and in the even more troublesome times to come, it is not easy to be happy, to have confidence and to feel secure. What can help us to feel happy, confident and secure now and in the future?
Have you ever read Psalm twenty-three? Whether you have or have not read it recently, why not do so now? It will take moments to read it in it’s entirety. Just do a search for Psalm 23 and enjoy the positive feelings of one putting their trust and confidence in the Almighty God.
This Psalm is a favorite of many.In it, David compares God to a shepherd taking care of sheep. It is to note that sheep are probably some of the most defenceless and vulnerable of all animals. They have no sharp teeth to bite or claws to attack. They are totally dependent on their shepherd to lead them to food and water and to protect them.
David, who knew much about taking care of sheep, looked to God (YHWH, Yahweh, Jehovah)
How did David feel when he saw how God looked after his human sheep? He felt happy, contend and satisfied. Why? David had come to know God. He knew that God was always in control of all things and because he knew that God who is almighty is in control, he felt happy.
David had also come to know what God is doing. He was well aware of the way God thought and what God was doing and would do. With God in control is there any need to be overly concerned about anything? No, we can all have the utmost confidence in a happy outcome of things in the future.
David felt secure in the knowledge that God would take care of him and that God loved him deeply. Therefore he could maintain his happiness and his confidence. We can do the same!
