Can everyone see God? Not according to what Jesus said. (See Matthew 5:8) It is only those who are pure in heart that will see God. If they are not pure in heart, God will not reveal himself to such individuals.
Since we need to be pure in heart to “see” God then we need to know what it means to be pure in heart? Purity of heart cannot be an act. Being pure in heart, is what we are inside of ourselves that humans cannot really see. However, God can see what we are at heart, what we are onthe inside.
So our inner person, our motives and desires need to be clean. We can fool people but we cannot fool God. Nothing is hidden from him, not even our thoughts and feelings. God can see us through and through.
So, what are we really like on the inside? What do we think about and what are we really like when others cannot see us? If we see impure things within us, then we can keep working at purifying ourselves by reading about Jesus and imitating his way of life. We need to develop in our hearts a godly attitude and become humble and modest in his eyes. (See James 4:7-8)
How will we “see” God? Will we be able to see him literally? No! Our eyes are not made to see God who is a Spirit. We will be able to see his personality in the creations around us.We will be able to see his qualities in the things that he has made. (See Romans 1:20) We will be able to see God with our mind, with the eyes of the mind, so to speak. (See Hebrews 11:27)
So, why is it that not everybody can see God? The problem is not with their eyes but with their hearts. It is because they do not clean their hearts, they are not pure in heart. That being the case, they cannot really understand God.
They may believe in God and perform outward acts of worship but inside where only God can see, they are not pure and therefore God does not allow them to see him. Their actions and way of life reveals that they do not know God; they haven’t come to see what God is really like.
However, if we want to see God, we can allow the cleansing power of God’s word to wash our inside, to wash our heart so that we can become pure in his eyes. (See Ephesians 5:26) When that happens, God will reveal himself to us and allow us to see him because our heart is pure.
Then God will reward us with many blessings now and into eternity. Truly, blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.
