Are You Watching What You Watch?

The eyes are at times described as the windows of the world. It is through the eyes that the world comes into our minds and then into our hearts. What the eyes look at or focus on can be very dangerous to the spirit. So great caution must be exercised when it comes to what we watch. Why should we watch what we watch?

It may be that the most serious sins have been a result of seeing something and then desiring it.

The devil!

What caused the devil to stop serving God? Was it that he saw something he desired? Was it

that he saw creatures worshipping God and wanted that for himself? Before he took any actions, did he start to fantasize what it would be like to be worshipped and did not dismiss the idea until he started to live his fantasy to his detriment, the detriment of some of his fellow angels and all of mankind?

Eve and later Adam!

Genesis 3:6 says that Eve began to see that the forbidden fruit began to look good and it was pleasant for the eyes. Looking too long at something forbidden can make us desire it to our downfall. It would have been best not let that fruit become the object of one’s desire. It seems that Adam did not want to lose such a beautiful woman as Eve.

The angels that sinned!

Genesis 6:2 shows that they noticed how beautiful the women were and they now desired to have sexual relations and take wives for themselves, something that was not for angels to do.

24,000 Israelites perish!

On the plains of Moab, beautiful Moabite women were

used to entice the Israelites to immorality and idolatry just as they were poised to enter the Promised Land. As a result, 24,000 Israelites perished.

King David and Bathsheba!

Though King David had a number of wives, when he saw beautiful Bathsheba, he has sexual relations with her, even though she was married woman.

The eyes are wonderful organs but they must not be allowed to focus on things that are off-limits. Doing so can get us to desire forbidden things and lead to losing God’s favor.

Advertisers use eye-appeal!

Advertisers know the power of the eyes to attract consumers to purchase their products. The eyes can be used to persuade a person against their better judgement and seduce them into buying things that they can’t afford.

No wonder that Jesus said that if our eye allows us to dwell on the wrong thing then it would be better top pluck it out and enter one-eyed into the kingdom.

Our eyes are precious but they must not be permitted to focus on the wrong things. They must be controlled so that we do not displease God. We must continue to be vigilant and watch what we watch. Yes, the windows are the eyes to the world but a window nends curtains, blinds or shutters and we should know how and when to close them!
